Memorable Individuals and Locations

We all have pleasant accidents that become memorable experiences and occasionally even life-changing circumstances. Here are a few of my favorite chance meetings, unique personalities, and places I’ve been fortunate to discover while traveling.

On a business trip earlier this year, I visited Marrakech, Morocco. One day when I had some spare time, I explored the city’s substantial outdoor market, the souks. I took a tiny detour and found myself in an area I had never been to. Just as I was ready to turn around, I spotted a small storefront with the words “Papier Mache” written on it.

I entered because I adore papier mache. The store was small and crowded, and the walls were covered in flowers, lamps, and other papier-mache animals. I spoke with Hassan, the shopkeeper, who was amiable. He claimed to have been creating papier mache for more than 30 years. He showed me some of his most recent works of art while we chatted about how much we love art.

One of the joys of my vacation was spending a couple of hours in Hassan’s shop. If I hadn’t been lost, I would never have discovered it!

I was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at another time. One evening, a few of us were living in the same hostel, and I decided to go out to supper. We eventually found ourselves at a tiny tavern serving the best Brazilian meal I’ve ever had. We ended up seated next to a group of Brazilian females because there were only a few tables in the restaurant due to its small size.

We started chatting with them and talked and laughed with them the entire night. We had an incredible experience as they took us to Rio. We met them and had a terrific night because we picked that restaurant.

And finally, while traveling in Nepal, I experienced one of my all-time favorite serendipitous events. I was trekking in the Himalayas.

Taking a simple interest in those around you is another approach to becoming fully immersed in a new culture. Please pay close attention to how It communicates with one another and you. Please pay attention to what matters to It. What does It discuss? What do they enjoy doing?

If you’re fortunate, you might even get to stay with a family while abroad. As you can observe the people’s daily life up close, this is a fantastic approach to learning about the culture.
